The Lama Temple is famous among young Chinese for luck with exams, jobs and love, and blessed bead bracelets sold at the temple’s own shop are a social-media favourite.

They make a nice souvenir. The shops lining Yonghegong Street outside sell look-alikes at inflated “blessed” prices — if you want one, buy it inside.
